<lead><![CDATA[John Biffar and Tiffany Chartier never saw a challenger in recording easy victories in the third Hooters to Hooters Half Marathon early Sunday morning, with a record field turning out for hot wings, beer and live music in Southwest Florida's most unique distance race. Biffar, of Cape Coral, captured the male division for the second consecutive year in one hour, 12 minutes and 26 seconds, just 30 seconds off his personal best set in 2009 in Orlando on a flat course.]]></lead>
<text><![CDATA[Chartier, 31, making her claim as the area's new leading female road racer, was the first female finisher while posting the fifth-best time overall, 1:20.10, a personal record for the 13.1-mile race. The record field of 752 runners - eclipsing the old mark of 591 in 2009 - started the race at 7 a.m. in 42-degree temperatures, perfect for distance running. The race started and finished at the Fort Myers Hooters restaurant, meandering through downtown, neighborhoods off McGregor Boulevard, across and back over the Edison Bridge and past City of Palms Park. The race could raise record money totals for the Moffitt Cancer Center and The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The 2009 race raised $15,000 after the event generated about $12,000 the first year. The festive atmosphere in the Hooters parking lot included hundreds of spectators cheering runners nearing the finishing line. The participants also had the option of the usual post-race food and beverages -fruit, bagels and fruit drinks - in addition to Hooters specialties.Biffar and Chartier served up a heavy dose of serious running, winning their respective races by 4:23 and 5:18, respectively.Cape Coral's Perry Small, 50, finished second to Biffar, reversing positions with Fort Myers High School track coach Yancey Palmer, the runner-up in 2009.Biffar bettered his winning time from a year ago by a minute and 20 seconds."I was challenged only by myself, and although I'm very tired, it was a good effort for a good cause - cancer research," said Biffar, 26. "I fell apart a little on the bridge, but I managed to pick the pace up a few minutes later."Biffar was impressed by training partners Small and Chartier. "I hope I can run like Perry when I'm 50; we're always pushing and motivating each other," Biffar said. "And Tiffany is the best, no doubt about that."Small was happy with his finish."I was consistent and had the same time as a few weeks ago in the Naples half marathon where I won the Grand Masters division," Small said. "The conditions were great, no breeze and a comfortable temperature. And I used the bridge as a challenge, allowing me to stay focused."Palmer, meanwhile, had dropped out of contention."I knew after the first five miles I was in serious trouble," Palmer said.Small called Chartier "the John Biffar of the female field"."This was my best half marathon, which is a little surprising with two trips over the bridge," said Chartier, a physical education and health teacher at Cypress Lake High School."I had a sore throat but I tried to forget about it. I tried to stay close to Yancey, and a group of guys paced me, one joining me at seven miles and staying until the finish."Kelly Britton and Lisa Buohler, two of Chartier's top competitors, finished second and fourth respectively."I kept stepping on myself; I guess that made it more fun. I'm happy; I ran well," said Britton, 32, the women's track coach at Fort Myers High School. "My girls' team members worked a water stop and I pushed the water they handed out back on them.""Tiffany and Kelly are so much younger and faster, I'm old school compared to them," said Buohler, 40."At least I was 'first mom'," said Britton, who has three kids, ages 5, 2 and 10 months.]]></text>
